(Compuware), a leading innovator in high-efficiency power solutions, today announced the launch of its new 33kW BBU Shelf (Battery Backup Unit Shelf), purpose-built for AI, HPC, and next-generation data center environments. The BBU Shelf delivers reliable, high-density backup power and, when paired with Compuware’s 33kW Power Shelf, forms a complete solution for power delivery and energy resilience.

As AI workloads and GPU-accelerated computing continue to scale, ensuring stable power and uninterrupted operation has become mission-critical. Compuware addresses this challenge by combining its high-output Power Shelves with the newly introduced BBU Shelf, creating an integrated architecture that supports both primary power and backup protection. This unified system enables data centers to achieve optimized efficiency, scalability, and reliability in increasingly power-intensive AI environments.

The BBU Shelf is engineered to deliver immediate and reliable backup power while seamlessly integrating into existing power infrastructures. Together with Compuware’s Power Shelf, it provides a comprehensive solution that covers both energy supply and continuity. Below are key highlights of this BBU Shelf:

  1. High-density 33kW Backup Power
    The BBU Shelf provides up to 33kW of rated backup power with a 90-second discharge duration, ensuring sufficient coverage for short-term outages and power fluctuation. Its 2RU form factor enables efficient space utilization within standard 19-inch racks, making it ideal for modern high-density AI application deployment.
  2. Modular Design with Redundancy
    Equipped with six 5.5kW BBU modules, the system supports 5+1 redundancy and hot-swappable capability, allowing continuous operation even during maintenance or module replacement. This modular architecture enhances system reliability while simplifying serviceability.
  3. Ultra-fast Power Transition
    The BBU Shelf delivers near-instant backup activation with ≤2ms transition time upon AC power loss. This rapid response minimizes system disruption and ensures the continuous operation of mission-critical workloads.
  4. Peak Load Handling for AI Workload
    Designed to support dynamic GPU power demands, the system can handle peak loads of up to 136% (≤50ms) and 160% (≤400μs), maintaining stable output within regulation. This capability is essential for AI servers with highly variable power consumption profiles.
  5. Seamless Integration with Power Shelves
    The solution supports synchronization with Power Shelf and allows multiple shelf configurations (BBU-to-BBU and BBU-to-Power Shelf), enabling scalable deployment within one rack or across large AI clusters and data centers.
  6. Advanced Monitoring and Communication
    An integrated Power Management Controller (PMC) provides real-time system monitoring and supports MOBUS and CANBUS protocols, offering enhanced visibility and control for data center operations.
  7. High Efficiency and Optimized Performance
    With charging efficiency exceeding 95% and discharging efficiency up to 97%, the BBU Shelf minimizes energy loss while maximizing operational effectiveness, contributing to overall data center sustainability.
